Open Primaries. Giving power back to the people.

Wyoming’s current election system limits voter participation and creates barriers to fair competition. Nearly 80% of voters don’t have a choice on the November ballot about who represents them because not everyone can vote in the election that matters most. Open primaries allow every voter to have a say in choosing the best candidate for the job without joining a political party.

The Freedom to Vote for Who You Want

  • All Voters Get a Say

All voters will have the freedom to participate in the election, which is paid for by all taxpayers.

  • Increases Accountability

This system increases accountability and competition, forcing candidates to appeal to voters rather than the political elites.

  • Simple & Secure

Wyoming elections will be even more secure because there will only be one ballot.

  • Fair for All

Open primaries don't favor any party. They simply let voters decide the best candidates, regardless of party affiliation.

  • One Primary Ballot

Instead of separate primaries that exclude people, all qualified voters will have the same ballot with every candidate and their party affiliation listed.

  • Voters Choose Their Top Candidate

The top two vote-getters in the primary election move to the November election.

  • Final Choice in November

Voters choose from the final two, voting for the candidate that best represents them.

“I’m signing this ballot initiative because our Wyoming communities matter over party. No matter your party, it's important your voice be heard and your vote be counted. ”

Maren Nicolaysen, fifth-generation Wyomingite, graduate of KWHS

“In Wyoming, we like to think for ourselves and value the freedom to do so. Just like our wide-open spaces, our choices should be free—not restricted by someone telling us how to vote.”

Rebekah Fitzgerald - Sheridan

Real People Supporting our Freedom

“As an educator and a conservative, I want leaders who focus on our values and Wyoming’s future—not just party agendas. Open primaries let me vote for who’ll truly serve our community.”

 Frequently Asked Questions

  • Open primaries give all Wyoming voters to have a voice in our elections. Today, Wyoming’s election system is broken - nearly 80% of Wyoming voters don’t have a choice on the November ballot about who represents them. Why? The system is set up to block competition and shut out independent voices. It’s time to fix that. Open primaries allow every registered voter – Republican, Democrat, Constitutionalist, Libertarian, or Unaffiliated - to vote for the best person for the job.

  • It’s simple and fair. Instead of separate Republican and Democrat primaries where minor parties and Independents are left out of the process, there will be one primary where everyone can vote for the candidate they choose. All candidates for an office will be listed on a single ballot, with their party affiliation clearly noted. Voters pick their top choice, and the two candidates with the most votes, regardless of party, advance to the November election. It’s a system that puts the voters in control.

  • Yes, nothing changes with this. It remains the same way it works with today's election system. Candidates in Wyoming self-identify with a party and then compete in the primary election. That would still happen in a top-two open primary. The difference is that the top two candidates, regardless of party, advance to the November ballot—giving all voters the power to decide between the best options.

  • Yes. Voting in the primary doesn't affect your ability to vote in the November general election. The primary narrows the field to the top two candidates, and you’ll get to vote again in November.

  • Open primaries won’t make Wyoming less conservative, but they will make our elections more competitive and accountable. Candidates will have to earn your vote by talking to more voters and focusing on the issues that matter most to Wyomingites. The result? More focus on solutions and not political rhetoric.

  • No. Open primaries don't favor any particular party. They simply let voters decide the best candidates, regardless of party affiliation. The goal is to ensure the most popular candidates, not the most partisan ones, advance.

  • No. Open primaries give all voters a say, but it's still up to individual voters to choose their preferred candidate. This system ensures more accountability, forcing candidates to appeal to a broader base rather than just the extremes of any party.

  • This is supported by a broad and extensive group of Wyomingites, including Republicans, Democrats, Independents, business owners, ranchers, teachers, and more. It’s people who want to make sure every Wyoming voter is free to vote for the candidate they believe best represents them.

  • Those who fear losing control. Some party leaders don’t like the idea because it threatens their grip on who gets elected in Wyoming. They may be right. Powerful people often want to keep that power. They don’t like competition and don’t want to be accountable to the voters. With the way the system is now, often a tiny portion – sometimes as little as 10% of voters - decides who represents them. This is how extremists get into power. Open primaries take power away from party elites and give it back to the people. It will ensure every voter has a fair shot at influencing the outcome of an election.
